Grab-n-Go grabs more food dollars
According to Technomic, grab-n-go meal offerings are now key elements of many successful food service venues, on both the commercial and noncommercial sides. Although restaurants may have started the trend, supermarkets and other retail operations are offering stiff competition and upgrading their to-go offerings.
- The total grab-n-go market was valued at $12,900,000 in 2012
- Beyond restaurants, supermarkets and c-stores claim the largest share of the market. Supermarkets come in at 22% and c-stores at 19%
- In 2012, drug stores commanded 6% of grab-n-go business but are a growing force, as they install or expand their food service operations and focus on freshly prepared selections
- Convenient and attractive portable packaging, diversity of flavors, ethnic selections and healthy alternatives all play a role in the fight for market share
- It's expected that the food service grab-n-go market will continue to grow, as best-in-class examples keep increasing the variety and quality of their on-the-go offerings
